Editorial Positions

I am currently a Co-Editor of Geopoliticsan international and multidisciplinary journal published by Taylor & Francis/Routledge (2018 onwards). I served on the international editorial advisory board for Environment and Planning A between 2016-2018. I have peer-reviewed research articles for over 30 different journal publications in geography, history, sociology, education,and religious studies, as well as reviewing book proposals for major publishers including SAGE, Routledge, Policy Press and Edward Elgar.

Research Group Committees of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)

I was Elected Chair of the Geographies of Children, Youth and Families Research Group (GCYFRG) of the RGS-IBG between 2015-18, having previously served as Treasurer (2011-14). I served as Secretary for the Social and Cultural Geography Research Group (SCGRG) between 2012-15 following a term as Membership Secretary (2011-12).

As part of my activities with these two research groups, I co-organised a SCGRG away weekend for postgraduate and early-career researchers with Rhys Dafydd Jones (2013), co-edited a SCGRG-organised special issue of ACME on the impact agenda (Rogers et al. 2012) and co-edited a GCYFRG special issue on ‘play in times of austerity’ (McKendrick et al. 2015).

Examiner & Peer-Review Responsibilities

I have externally examined PhD thesis at the University of Oxford, Newcastle University/Durham University, University of Leeds and UCLan. I have also been an internal PhD examiner at Loughborough University and an external MSc examiner at National University of Singapore.

I am the Human Geography External Examiner for the Degree Programme at the National University of Ireland in Galway.

I have served on the RGS-IBG Grant Awarding Panel (Dudley Stamp Memorial Award; Postgraduate Research Award).

Invited Talks, Conferences/Workshops and Public Engagement

I have given 17 invited research seminars, including a keynote at the IOE/UCL's 'New Horizons in the History of Education' workshop and international talks in New York (CUNY) and Singapore (NUS).  I have been an invited panellist and discussant at various conferences including the AAG and RGS-IBG in Geography, and at workshops in History, Political Science and Religious Studies.

With colleagues from UK, European and US Universities, I have co-organised 11 conference sessions at international geography conferences and 7 stand-alone workshops, presenting over 30 conference papers on individual and collaborative research at international conferences and national workshops.

I have been interviewed about my research on BBC Radio Leicester (2018; 2013) and on BBC Radio5 Live (2013).


Research Project Advisory Groups

I am an invited member of two research project advisory groups. First, as part of the expert advisory panel for the British Academy project Digitising the mixed economy of welfare in Britain’ led by Dr Georgina Brewis, IOE/UCL (2014-2019). Second, I serve on Dr Danielle van der Burgt’s (Uppsala Universitet) project advisory group for  ‘Mobility, informal learning and citizenship in mobile pre-schools’ funded by The Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences (2016-8).
