Research Group Committees of the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG)

I am the current Elected Chair of the Geographies of Children, Youth and Families Research Group (GCYFRG) of the RGS-IBG (2015-8), having previously served as Treasurer (2011-2014). I served as Secretary for the Social and Cultural Geography Research Group (SCGRG) between 2012-2015 following a term as Membership Secretary (2011-2012).

As part of my activities with these two research groups, I co-organised a SCGRG away weekend for postgraduate and early-career researchers with Rhys Dafydd Jones (2013), co-edited a SCGRG-organised special issue of ACME on the impact agenda (Rogers et al. 2012) and co-edited a GCYFRG special issue on ‘play in times of austerity’ (McKendrick et al. 2015).

Conferences, workshops and invited talks

I have given 17 invited research seminars, including a keynote at the IOE/UCL's 'New Horizons in the History of Education' workshop and international talks in New York (CUNY) and Singapore (NUS).  I have been an invited panellist and discussant at various conferences including the AAG and RGS-IBG in Geography, and at workshops in History, Political Science and Religious Studies.

With colleagues from UK, European and US Universities, I have co-organised 11 conference sessions at international geography conferences and 7 stand-alone workshops, presenting 33 conference papers on individual and collaborative research at international conferences and national workshops.  For conference/working papers on my latest  ESRC grant click here.

In 2013, my research on youth organisations featured on BBC Radio5 Live and BBC Radio Leicester.

Research Project Advisory Groups

I am an invited member of two research project advisory groups. First, as part of the expert advisory panel for the British Academy project Digitising the mixed economy of welfare in Britain’ led by Dr Georgina Brewis, IOE/UCL (2014-2019). Second, I serve on Dr Danielle van der Burgt’s (Uppsala Universitet) project advisory group for  ‘Mobility, informal learning and citizenship in mobile pre-schools’ funded by The Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences (2016-8).

Peer-review and editorial-related roles

I am a member of the international editorial advisory board for Environment and Planning A (2016-2018) and have peer-reviewed research articles for over 25 different journal publications:

I have served on the RGS-IBG Grant Awarding Panel (Dudley Stamp Memorial Award; Postgraduate Research Award).

I have reviewed book proposals for SAGE, Policy Press, Edward Elgar and Rowman & Littleford.

Examination roles and responsibilites

In December 2015, I was the external PhD examiner for Dr Yi’En Cheng’s thesis on education, youth and citizenship (University of Oxford). I have three external examiner posts pending PhD submissions (Leeds; Newcastle; UCLan).

I have also been an internal PhD examiner at Loughborough University (Dr Kelly Wakefield; Dr Stefanie Gregorius) and an external MSc examiner (National University of Singapore).

I am the Human Geography External Examiner for the Degree Programme at the National University of Ireland in Galway.
